Central Pa. teachers strike; classes canceled

MILLVILLE, Pa. (AP) - Teachers in one central Pennsylvania school district have gone on strike following the breakdown of contract talks.

Classes were scheduled to begin Wednesday in the Millville Area School District, but officials said classes are canceled until further notice due to the walkout.

The district's approximately 62 teachers have been working without a contract since 2012.

Union representative Mark McDade said they have not received any raises in more than three years.

Other issues in the talks are an increase in health care costs and professional development incentives.

State education officials will determine the maximum possible length of the walkout. By law, schools must be in session 180 days by June 15.

Officials said the talks broke down Tuesday evening, and there was no word about any new negotiating sessions.
