York-based Stewart & Tate affiliate wins $30M contract for Maryland School for the Blind

The Baltimore affiliate of a York-based construction company has won a $30 million campus improvement contract at the Maryland School for the Blind.

Stewart & Tate Construction’s Lewis Contractors will act as construction manager leading the project, according to a news release.

The project, at the school’s 100-acre campus in northeast Baltimore, off Taylor Avenue, will involve construction of a two-story, 35,000-square-foot classroom building and two adjacent residential buildings totaling 32,000 square feet. Work on the Autism-Blind Classroom & Cottage Buildings is set to start this fall and be complete for the beginning of the 2016 school year, according to Stewart & Tate.

The new project comes as Lewis is completing a $24 million improvement project for school that started in 2011, according to Stewart & Tate. Work includes construction of a 22,550-square-foot academic building and a two-story, 19,000-square-foot LIFE cottage facility. The academic building will contain space for about 60 students and include 12 to 14 areas where students work on independent living skills development. The cottage will contain five to six double occupancy bedrooms with accessible bathrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen and a private area for staff quarters.

Construction of the current LIFE-Academic project is set to be complete by the end of the year, according to Stewart & Tate.

As a statewide resource center, the school provides outreach, educational and residential services for students, preparing them to be successful, independent and well-rounded contributing members of their communities. Annually, the school serves 73 percent of the 1,800 students identified in Maryland who are blind or visually impaired from infancy to age 21, according to the release.

Stewart & Tate Construction is a family-owned and operated, full-service construction firm that specializes in general building construction, site development, underground utilities, concrete construction, specialty paving and specialized industrial construction. Headquartered in York, the company provides preconstruction, construction and post-construction services for projects throughout southcentral Pennsylvania and Maryland, according to the release.
