Road work linked to massive FedEx project takes place Thursday

Road work connected to the proposed FedEx distribution center takes place in Hanover Township, Lehigh County, on Thursday, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said.

A contractor working for the Rockefeller Group Development Corp. of New York will perform the work to extract core samples for potential future road improvements for the private development.

The work will take place on Airport Road between Race Street and Avenue C near Lehigh Valley International Airport and on Race Street between Willowbrook Road and Airport Road.

The work should take one day to complete, but could be extended if necessary, said Sean Brown, spokesman for PennDOT.

The FedEx center would be in Allen Township on 250 acres of land owned by the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority. In October 2013, the authority agreed to sell the land to Rockefeller.

As previously reported, Clark Machemer, vice president and regional director for The Rockefeller Group, said he hopes to close on the first property in 2014 and start construction once the property is acquired, bringing hundreds of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent jobs.
