Philadelphia gets $30M in HUD money

Philadelphia received $30 million in Housing and Urban Development funds and was one of four cities to receive the money.

HUD received 44 applications for the grants and awarded Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Norwalk, Conn., and Columbus, Ohio a combined $120 million in so-called Choice Neighborhoods Implementation funds.

Philadelphia will use the money to initiate a revitalization effort of North Central Philadelphia, which suffers from poverty, unemployment and poor educational attainment.

The funds will go toward constructing 300 housing units as well as building and renovating 147 units at the Norris apartments. It could help create 600 construction jobs and 300 permanent jobs. Philadelphia will also seek to leverage money to get an additional $125 million in federal, state, other public and private funds.
