CHERRY HILL - One worker was killed and another injured when
the building they were demolishing collapsed on Route 38 in Cherry Hill.
The contractor, whose name has not been released, was
working to take down a former Blockbuster building to make way for a Wawa in
the shopping center at 500 Route 38.
Cherry Hill Fire Director Patrick Kelly said the building
was mostly demolished when a concrete wall fell around 12:30 this afternoon.
"It was 98 percent down. For some reason it came
down."
Fire and emergency crews arrived at the scene six minutes
after the 12:30 call and rushed a second contractor to Kennedy hospital. He
escaped from the rubble on his own and is expected to survive, Kelly said.
Kelly said the contracting company, which he declined to
name, had all proper permits.
Around 2 p.m. firefighters started heaving large
cinderblocks out of the way to pull the dead worker from under the rubble.
Firefighters from Cherry Hill and Camden waited to retrieve
the body, Kelly said, to allow the prosecutor's office to investigate.
