Officials broke ground Monday on a $198 million widening
project on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
A five-mile stretch of the turnpike, from just south of
Berks Road to just north of Lansdale, will be expanded to six lanes.
The project will also build three new ramps at Lansdale, two
of which will be "EZPass-only" lanes, allowing drivers to get on
I-476 without slowing at a toll plaza.
This area "is the busiest four-lane section of highway
across the entire turnpike system, with average traffic exceeding 65,500
vehicles per day," said Turnpike Commission CEO Mark Compton.
By 2030, Compton said, traffic is expected to grow to
100,000 vehicles per day.
The project is funded entirely by toll revenues, and is
expected to be complete in late 2016
