BIM promises to deliver significant cost savings, even
though it’s not yet entirely clear how these savings will eventuate, who owns
these cost savings today and who will benefit in the future.
On a project-by-project or company basis, clear evidence
exists that a move into 3D processes and then BIM is a more certain place for
the industry. In fact, businesses already investing in the technology are
reporting savings.
In Australia, designers are reporting savings in man-hours
of 30 percent when using 3D over 2-dimensional (2D) processes. 4D programmers
and 5D quantity surveyors are reporting reductions in time (from weeks to days)
in producing estimates and developing real-time revisioning that increases the
integrity and certainty of the model data. Mechanical contractors, who are
leading the charge in integrated supply-chain workflows and prefabrication
techniques, also are reporting labor savings of up to 30 percent as a result of
reliable model data.
