EnerSys breaks ground on $14M expansion in Berks

EnerSys has broken ground on an expansion on its Bernville Road headquarters in Bern Township, just outside Reading.

The $14 million 70,000-square-foot addition will nearly double the size of the existing 80,000-square-foot building where the industrial battery manufacturer operates.

Richard Zuidema, executive vice president of EnerSys, said the expansion shows the global company’s commitment to maintaining its headquarters in Berks County.

“We are committed to Berks and we think this Reading location is the place for us,” Zuidema said.

Construction on the expansion will be managed by SMJ Construction of Douglasville and is expected to take about a year.

“Unless we have another winter like the last one, we should be moved in my next July,” Zuidema said.

The building will be a mix of office and lab space.

The addition will create enough room to hire another 100 employees to the existing Reading workforce of 265.

EnerSys employs more than 10,000 people worldwide and is the largest industrial battery manufacturer in the world
