Construction firm earns regional award for Crayola project

Boyle Construction Management of South Whitehall Township earned a 2014 Project of the Year award for the Crayola Experience in Easton from the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Construction Management Association of America.

The Crayola Experience is a hands-on, interactive children’s activity center, which is a separate division of Crayola LLC, headquartered in Forks Township.

The award is given to private sector projects less than $20 million.

It marks the third time Boyle received an award from the Mid-Atlantic Chapter. Sean Boyle, president of Boyle Construction, said the company received an award a few years ago for building the Bethlehem parking deck at North Street.

Boyle said the award validates the complexity of the project, which involved rehabilitating five connected historic buildings in Downtown Easton to re-create and expand the Crayola Experience into a 60,000-square-foot site.

“It wasn’t your run-of-the-mill greenfield project,” Boyle said. “A lot of consultants worked on the project; there was a lot of coordination that we had to do on our end.”

Boyle completed the project in about 15 weeks; the company had to schedule all contractors to ensure it was completed on time. A lot of structural modifications had to be finished, he added. Other highlights include customized flooring, fixtures and crayon columns.

The project, which included more than 20 attractions, opened in May 2013 and included building a Crayola Experience café where a McDonald’s once sat. Also, Boyle completed construction work to the exterior. W2A Design Group of Allentown was the architect.

The awards ceremony is June 24 in Philadelphia.
