Harrisburg-based Alexander Building Construction Co. has
begun the construction phase of an amphitheater for the Ned Smith Center for
Nature and Art in Upper Paxton Township.
The 3,620-square-foot project is slated to be done by the
end of July, according to Alexander. A
grand opening is scheduled for July 25, according to the center’s
website.
The size of the contract was not released.
The capital campaign was reportedly $1.7 million.
The facility will have seating for up to 250 visitors that
is stair-stepped into the hillside, a stage flanked by wings allowing
lower-level access, a custom-designed curtain system, lower-level backstage
areas and restroom facilities.
“The amphitheater project is the next step in the growth and
evolution of the Ned Smith Center,” said Stephen Quigley, the center’s
executive director. “Breaking ground on this project is the culmination of a
five-year plan developed by the board and the staff, along with the phenomenal
financial support of our members and supporters of the center.”
The northern Dauphin County center is located on more than
500 acres, which includes hardwood forests, streams and 12 miles of wildlife
trails.
