The City of Philadelphia and Philadelphia International
Airport officials have reached an agreement with officials from Tinicum
Township, Delaware County and the Interboro School District on expanding the
airport. In a press release, city officials referred to it as a
"multi-billion dollar Capacity Enhancement Program (CEP)."
A 2 p.m. Monday press conference has been called that will
provide details. Speakers include Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter, Deputy
Mayor Rina Cutler, Airport CEO Mark Gale, Delaware County Council Chairman Tom
McGarrigle, Tinicum Board of Commissioners President Tom Giancristoforo Jr. and
U.S. Rep. Patrick Meehan.
In 2011, the Federal Aviation Administration’s approved a
$5.2 billion airport-expansion plan, but neighboring Tinicum Township has
opposed the plan, which would have called for paving over 80 acres of wetlands,
relocating residents of 72 homes, and displacing 80 businesses.
