Firm selected to create master plan for 30th Street Station

A New York firm has been picked to come up with a master plan for the area around 30th Street Station in Philadelphia.

Skidmore Owings & Merrill, a well-known architectural firm, will team up with Parsons Brinckerhoff, OLIN and HR&A Advisors to create plans that re-envision the area and establish a single, integrated vision for the 30th Street Station, according to a statement released by Amtrak. Skidmore has been involved with many high-profile projects across the world and United States. IT was selected by Amtrak, Drexel University and Brandywine Realty Trust.

This is a big deal for Philadelphia since 30th Street Station is a gateway to the city that serves as a first impression of Philadelphia for travelers that offers a huge economic development opportunity. The plan will involve not only analyzing and improving the retail space within the train station but also the development of air rights above 75 acres of rail yards next to the station.

Skidmore Owings & Merrill will begin its work immediately and the firm will take about two years to come up with the plan. The process will be overseen by a group comprised of officials from Amtrak, Drexel, Brandywine, SEPTA, PennDot, Philadelphia, CSX Corp., University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp., Schuylkill River Development Corp. and University City District.
