PetSmart site that received state incentives promises 500 jobs

PetSmart will unveil a distribution center this week partly financed by Pennsylvania taxpayers.

The 870,000-square-foot site, which will supply 260 stores in 11 states by next year, is planned for Bethel, Berks County, near the heavily traveled interchange of I-78 and Route 501.

As part of an incentive package, PetSmart is expected to create 500 jobs by 2016.

The cost of the site was more than $50 million.

PetSmart received a $2.3 million funding offer from the Department of Community and Economic Development, including a $1 million “PA First” grant, $245,250 in job training assistance and $1.1 million in job-creation tax credits, Gov. Tom Corbett said when the plan was announced in July 2012.

A grand opening ceremony is planned for March 28.
