After a series of protests
outside the Trolley Car Diner & Deli in early Feburary, members of
IBEW Local 98 took to the streets outside the Mt. Airy restaurant again over
the weekend.
The protests were aimed at local developer and diner owner,
Ken Weinstein, for allowing the use of non-union workers at a construction site
in Germantown where the long-vacant St. Peter's Episcopal Church is being
turned into the Waldorf School of Philadelphia.
In an email to community members on Saturday, Weinstein
implored local residents to visit the diner to show their support.
"I don't care whether or not you stay to eat at the
Diner, just that you let the protestors know that they do not have the support
of our community and that they should support my efforts to make Northwest
Philadelphia a better place to live, work, learn and enjoy," he said.
In a statement in early Feburary, Frank Keel, spokesperson
for IBEW 98 President John Dougherty, said, "IBEW Local 98 is engaging in
a peaceful, lawful protest and exercising its First Amendment right of free
speech to notify area residents that Weinstein is helping to destroy area wages
and benefits."
