Kinsley Construction of Wyomissing completed construction of
a new regional distribution center for Dollar General in Bethel Township, Berks
County.
Estimated to cost about $70 million to build, the 1
million-square-foot-facility is designed to serve more than 1,000 Dollar
General stores throughout the Northeast. The project began in January 2013.
Designed by Leo A. Daly Architects, the building
incorporates several energy-saving features such as light-emitting diode bulbs
and a computerized energy management system that automatically controls
lighting and interior climate to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The project includes a siphonic roof drain system, a concept
that creates a suction effect which siphons water off the roof at a high
velocity. The design requires fewer drains and eliminates external downspouts.
Because all horizontal piping is installed flat, roof slopes
can be reduced, which increases the building clear-height and minimizes the
excavation needed for underground piping.
Jack Hoy, business development representative for Kinsey,
said the company also is building a warehouse and distribution site in Lower
Nazareth Township for Griffin Land. Construction should finish by the end of
April.
"Pre-cast is up, steel is complete," Hoy said.
"Despite the weather, we are making progress, it's well underway."
The Berks company wants to do more of these projects in the
Lehigh Valley.
Over the past 15-20 years, Kinsley has completed more than
50 million square feet of warehouse and distribution space, Hoy said.
