Chester Upland announces elimination of 10 administrative jobs as part of cost saving move

CHESTER — The Chester Upland School District is laying off 10 administrative employees as part of a cost saving measure expected to save the district more than $1 million.

The targeted reductions aim to minimize the impact on teaching and learning for students, the district said in a press release issued Wednesday afternoon.

The elimination of 10 positions will save an estimated $1.4 million from the district’s $125 million budget, which is operating with a $20 million deficit. A state-mandated recovery plan seeks to reduce costs and improve academic performance.

Chester Upland’s enrollment increased by more than 30 percent this year, according to the release, and currently stands at 2,923 students.

The staff reductions bring the district’s administrative staff more in line with districts of similar size in the area, the release states. The release did not specifically say which positions were being cut.

A press conference with Receiver Joe Watkins and Superintendent Gregory Shannon is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the district administration building. Check delcotimes.com later for updates.
