Teachers reach tentative agreement in Phoenixville
PHOENIXVILLE Four months after ratifying a teacher contract
that took three years of negotiations to reach, the Phoenixville Area School
District announced Tuesday that it and the teachers union have come to a
tentative agreement on a contract that would take effect July 1.
The current four-year contract, which replaced one that
expired in June 2010, was ratified in September 2013 and runs through the end
of June.
"We started bargaining again in October to see if we
could get an early bird done. And that's what we reached a tentative agreement
on today," Keith Black, the district's director of human resources, said
Tuesday.
Both the district and the Phoenixville Area Education
Association must still vote on ratifying the contract. Those votes will both take
place Jan. 23.
District officials declined to provide details about the
proposed two-year contract that will be discussed at the board's Jan. 23
meeting.
Black said that in the current contract, teachers agreed to
pay a percentage of health insurance premiums as opposed to a flat rate in
exchange for receiving step increases and raises. - Tricia L. Nadolny
