Montgomery County garage to be overhauled

NORRISTOWN Construction will begin next month on the county-owned Norristown parking garage that serves county jurors, the state Department of Environmental Protection, and the general public.

The garage, on Main Street between DeKalb and Swede Streets, will close beginning in mid-February for two to three months, county officials said. It will reopen in sections until construction is complete, which could take up to a year.

The garage has long been in need of repair, with sagging floors, unsafe stairwells, and loose electrical wires, said County Commissioner Leslie Richards.

The commissioners on Thursday approved a $4.6 million contract - 35 percent lower than had been anticipated - to rehabilitate the garage.

"That garage is used by our jurors. Sometimes this is their only visit to Norristown [the county seat], and we want that to be as pleasant as possible," Richards said.

Alternate parking will be provided to jurors during the closure, county officials said.
