Group organizes to oppose $175M FedEx plant in Allen Township

A group of concerned citizens is organizing to oppose the proposed construction of a Federal Express Ground processing plant in Allen Township.

The $175 million facility on Willowbrook Road would service more than 1,800 tractor trailers and be open seven days a week, 24 hours per day, the group said. It would be on property just north of the Lehigh Valley International Airport on property owned by the Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority.

FedEx said the 1.3-million-square-foot facility could bring as many as 800 jobs to the region. Residents said they are concerned that the project could also bring, traffic, noise and pollution.

"It's inappropriate for such a densely populated area," said John Mattaboni, a nearby resident, who said he will be able to see the facility from his property. "We want to preserve the pastoral setting of this community."

The project earned the backing of the Lehigh Valley Planning Commission earlier this month.

The resident group plans to protest the development at the Allen Township Planning Committee Meeting tonight. The meeting is at the Allen Township Fire Department building at 3530 Howertown Road in Northampton. The meeting starts at 7 p.m.
