Large apartment complex one step closer to possible approval

Lower Nazareth Township supervisors Wednesday backed a plan for a 500-unit apartment complex at Hecktown and Country Club roads despite residents’ concerns about crowded schools, traffic woes and sewage costs.

The 3-2 vote sends the proposal for Stone Post Meadows to the Lower Nazareth Planning Commission and Lehigh Valley Planning Commission for further review and comments.

The apartment complex proposal is an amendment – an addition to the original plan for an office complex on the 52-acre site developed by K&S Land Development LLC of Bethlehem.

"This is only the beginning of a long, stringent process," said Eric Naugle, supervisors' chairman, who voted for approval of the plan. "I, along with my colleagues on the board, am well aware of concerns voiced by area residents, and I assure you that those concerns will be addressed through the process."

At the meeting, Robert and Beverly Hoyer, owners of Buzas' Greenhouse and Farm, cited traffic concerns in opposing the apartment complex. Their fourth generation family business has been at its location for more than 50 years.

"If people can't get in and out of our business easily, they will take their business somewhere else," Robert Hoyer said. "I am right across the street from the site, and traffic is already backed up."

He also said that nearby Lower Nazareth Elementary School already is at full capacity. And he said it would be costly to connect the apartment complex to sewer lines that are at least a mile away.

Representatives of K&S Land Development could not be reached for comment.
