McDonald’s and Wendy’s employees in Wilmington, Del., will
join in Thursday’s 100-city strike by fast-food workers.
Workers plan to bring wider attention for a base wage of $15
an hour and the right to union representation.
Delaware’s 11,200 fast-food workers make a median wage of
$8.57 an hour, according to the Service Employees International Union.
Wilmington’s strike and “speak out” will start at 10 a.m. on
Thursday and include a Wendy’s (4125 Concord Pike) and a McDonald’s (700 W. 4th
St.), followed by a rally at St. Paul’s Church (1010 W. 4th St.).
Along with workers, speakers at the rally will include State
Rep. John Kowalko, Wilmington City Councilman Nnamdi O. Chukwuocha, Dan Reyes
of the Coalition to End Hunger, Darlene Battle of the Delaware Alliance for
Community Advancement and Ezra Temko of Americans for Democratic Action.
Elsewhere, strikes are planned for Pittsburgh, Boston,
Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, as well as Hartford, Conn.;
