Bethlehem, Pa., receives preservation award for Bethlehem Steel building renovation

Bethlehem is receiving a historic preservation award for the work the Bethlehem Redevelopment Authority did to turn an 1863 Bethlehem Steel Corp. building into a city visitors center.

Preservation Pennsylvania has granted the city its 2013 preservation award for an industrial project based on the building’s previous use.

The Bethlehem Redevelopment Authority spent $5.5 million from a special Steel site redevelopment fund to renovate the former Steel stock house into the visitors center and office space for ArtsQuest. Construction company Boyle Construction, of South Whitehall Township, refurbished both the building’s original stone work and interior steel.

“Given the building’s prominence on the site and its age and importance, we felt it was important to not only ‘rehabilitate’ the building but ‘restore’ it as well,” authority Executive Director Tony Hanna said in a statement.
