The Delaware
River Waterfront Corp. will officially break ground this Thursday on Pier 53, a
new park on the site of a former immigration station.
The property at
Washington Avenue and South Columbus Boulevard also served as Philadelphia’s
and the nation’s first Navy Yard.
The roughly $1.5
million project will extend Washington Avenue Green and allow visitors to
access the river using an elevated boardwalk and enjoy extended views of the
river. A public art display will acknowledge the site’s history as an
immigration station. It was designed by Applied Ecological Services.
Pier 53 is the
latest project to stem from a master plan that DRWC established in 2011 that
addresses development along a six-mile stretch of the Delaware River.
