The Delaware River Waterfront Continues Its Growth With An Elevated Boardwalk And Path At Pier 53 On Washington Avenue Green Coming In Spring 2014

The Delaware River waterfront holds a host of fantastic festivals and irresistible attractions, but the most compelling draw to the river might just be the advancements of the Central Delaware Master Plan.
With just a few final approvals pending, Washington Avenue Green will soon see its footprint expanding right out into the Delaware River.
Opened in 2010 as part of an early-action effort to help Philadelphia reclaim its waterfront and increase access to the Delaware River, Washington Avenue Green provides a green respite and serves as the northern anchor of an ecological park and recreational trail system which will eventually run south to Pier 70 (next to Walmart and Super Fresh in South Philly).
Now, Washington Avenue Green and its adjacent Pier 53 will see even more upgrades with new construction this fall to build an on-grade path and and an elevated boardwalk so visitors can reach the tip of the pier and get close enough to the water to touch it.
The new on-the-water public space will extend from the shore, and include essential stabilization of the surrounding intertidal and riparian plantings, as well as visitor-friendly amenities like gathering spaces, seating areas and a public art program by artist Jody Pinto.
Groundbreaking is slated for this October, once final approvals come in from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and the new space is slated to open in the spring of 2014.
We can’t wait for the new horizon of the river’s shore to come into view.
