Hospital plan out; medical village plan in for Bucks County

Aria Health, thwarted its plan to build a new hospital in Bucks County. Instead, the company is moving forward with a scaled-back plan for a health complex on what was formerly farm land.
The Philadelphia-based health system initially wanted to build a new hospital and medical office building in Lower Makefield, Pa.
That proposal ran into opposition from community members concerned about increased traffic congestion the project would bring. Aria was ultimately unable to get zoning approval for the proposed project on 41 acres at the corner of Stony Hill Rd. and the Newtown Bypass.
Wednesday night, health officials presented a new plan to Lower Makefield Township representatives that calls for the creation of a “medical village.”
The medical village could consist of a mix of buildings including an ambulatory-care center, a medical office building, clinical research space, a spa and possibly restaurants.
“We believe that the Village concept, which provides community-based and community-focused health and wellness services, is the best option for development of Aria’s land tract in Lower Makefield,” Aria officials said in a prepared statement. “The medical village will be designed to address the current shift from inpatient to outpatient services, with a strong focus on preventive health. Aria looks forward to feedback from both Lower Makefield Township officials and community members as we continue to evolve our plans.”
Aria plans to develop a more specific proposal based on the comments it gets from the township and its residents.
