The resolution of the one-day strike at the Pennsylvania Convention Center was “very good news” for the city and the center’s customers, the president and CEO of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau said in an email to the Convention Center’s customers.
Jack Ferguson said he center and the six unions working there agreed to a one-year collective bargaining agreement that boosted wages by 2.5 percent and established a committee to work on establishing a new agreement on work rules. Four of the six unions walked out Thursday.
“We are all very optimistic about the dialogue between our partners at the Center, SMG and the unions that emerged during these negotiations,” Ferguson wrote.
SMG is the West Conshohocken, Pa.-based company that will be taking over management of the center in October.
The center opened a $780 million expansion two years ago and is under pressure to produce the results expected from the project.
Reaching agreement with the unions on work rules is considered key to making that happen.
